Cross my heart and hope to die. A phrase very commonly used, sometimes without much thought in what the words really mean.
But really, how ready are we for death?
Every night, I lie awake thinking, 'Dear God, would this be the last time I close my eyes?'
And then the darkness of my closed eyelids play cruel visions of how I haven't been a good person, of people I've hurt, words I should have said, words I shouldn't have said.
And then I think about what people would think of me when I'm gone. Would they have thought lovingly of me? Or would I have left a legacy of misery in my life? It's selfish. Every human being, no matter how insignificant they might be to the world, would have wanted to leave at least a footprint behind by which others can remember them.
And then I pray that this is not my last night. I pray for forgiveness, and then I hope, that God will give me another chance to plant another footprint tomorrow.
What if, the breath you're taking in now, is the last breath you'll take?
What if, the words you just said in anger, are the last words you will ever say?
Death is the only certainty in life. Yet we treat life as if we have a lot of it to spare. We're all dying, but unlike some, we don't have a timer strapped to our chests telling us how many precious seconds we have left to make the most out of our lives.
I'll be honest. I'm not ready to die. And somehow, I doubt I'll ever be. But when it comes, I hope, it would be at a time when I've lived enough and prepared myself enough to face it.
