The olympics are being mentioned every 5 seconds on local tv, And probably every 10 seconds on international.
Overrated much?
What started out as a way of bringing nations together has become a way for countries to show off their might. Of course, I speak unjustified, and these thoughts come purely in their uninhibited form from the recesses of my lumpy grey matter. (or was it white?)
Many coutries might think the billions they spend to whip up their chosen ones, the gazillion they spent to beautify their country are just in the name of world peace, because, ultimately, that is the true, but nevertheless idealistic aim of the games.
They are just doing something else "in the name of " something greater, but doing nothing to help the real problem of the world. Social problems; present in every single country in this world, just WHAT are the Olympics doing to counter them?
Olympic, as anyone can tell you, was formed to put an end to war. So that youths fight in sports instead of in war. To a certain limited extent, I guess this has helped. The evidence being the lack of war, or rather, I should say, inter-nation war. However, if not for the MAD theory, some parts of asia would have been buried into the very core of the earth.
Like, for example, NKorea would have been reduced to nil by now.
Total annihilation. Hahah.
Anyway, my point is that, in the olympics, among the feverish desire to win medals, WHEN do they think about the true message of the Olympics? When you're busy killing each other off in a swimming pool, I would very much doubt you'd have a fraction of a second to think about the reason behind it.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea behind the olympics, but I believe they should tweak it a little so as to put across to denizens of the world the idealistic aim of the Games. Then, little by little, perhaps, it would cease to be idealistic at all. (:
Well of course.
We all (especially Miss Universe contestants) hope for world peace.
