Life has been rather hard on my sleeping habits. I just don't get enough sleep although I think I'm the only one to blame! On Monday morning, waking up late after having just 3 hours of sleep, I had to rush to school, carrying my big-ass project with me. (The cab fare cos me 15 bugs again) I was, inevitably, groggy and on top of that, low blood glucose levels dictated that I should have a pounding headache on top of being extremely pissed with the thought that my other group member would have had 8 hours of beauty sleep while I was slogging away through the night. but of course, it was entire my C personality self that put me through that.. He would have been perfectly fine with handing in a slipshod piece. )=
When I came to school, things got slightly better because evil me realised that I was not behind time and that a few groups basically still had nothing done.
When the lesson came, I was prepared, as they did tell us that were going to have to present in front of 3 classes (and that is about 70+ people) . And as Murphy Law would have it, mine was, unfortunately, one of the 2 groups to present for my class. My wall started to kick in and when I stood up there, I could feel all those PW practices, all those English class presentations, even GP presentations do their magic. I didn't shake, I talked as I could, amazingly, I don't know where the supply of butterflies in my stomach had gone, but I was .. calm ?
I expected my partner to talk more, I guess. Since he was always talking too much, always getting in trouble because of what he said without meaning to say. Oh well. I should have known he was a citizen of NATO.
At the end of the day, I wound up having to lug the big-ass project home again.
As I sat on the bus, I could almost feel the chill as the lightning and thunder gathered in the dark clouds looming over my head. I was feeling tied down. I was worried. My partner was, essentially, a dead weight which I am almost not strong enough to carry.
Anyway, I was almost nodding off to sleep, enjoying the blank trance that Jason Mraz's songs somehow always puts me through when I noticed the bus taking a wrong turn.
I saw a sign for PIE (Tuas) and the thought that immediately hit me was, "Oh SHIT! I took the wrong bus? Since when did 33 change their route?"
But apparently . I was wrong. 33 did NOT change their route and I was NOT on the wrong bus, the bus driver, however, paid much in terms of stress and sweat.
The bus was stuck in the filter lane, unable to move forward because, there is no way for a bus to Uturn before a PIE entrance. Plus, U-Turns are for 1500kg vehicles only anyway. The passengers of the bus were getting restless, and the bus was making no progress moving forward and backward but essentially still stuck in the rut. And 2 kind old men offered to direct traffic so the bus could get a move on.
I was fully prepared to nurture my thunderbolts to a full blown storm because of this situation but instead, I found it rather comical. All the aunties and uncles sitting near the back of the bus with me started standing up and giving the driver instructions like "Gostan! Gostan!" when they want him to reverse and a unanimous "EY!OY! TENTEN!" (excuse my hanyupinyin but I do believe they were saying "wait" in Mandarin)
They even gave feedback like, a little to the right, little to the left etc. What I expected was a collective grumble session on the stupidity of the bus driver but I was amazed it didn't happen at all! (or maybe it did, in hokkien, and I was a total idiot in the middle, not understanding a word they said) But anyway, it was the communication and cooperation between the driver and the passengers which eventually helped the bus get out of its uh . situation.
And when the bus finally got a move on after being stuck for close to twenty minutes, the aunties and uncles (who by the way, were complete strangers to each other, even though their hokkien seemed to unite them) gave satisfied chuckles and all I felt that was missing was an uproarious round of applause.
The situation was indeed funny that even I broke out a smile and seemingly forgot all about my troubles for awhile. It is in times like this that I truly see the Singapore spirit shining through. Now I sound like a patriotic mutt but honestly, it is one of those things that gives my heart a warm flutter to see the human spirit of compassion.
Ah, Singapore has hopes of being a gracious society afterall.
