I think I'm growing too old for stupid crushes and stalker-ish moves.

But then again, I couldn't help it. It was easily a choice between 2 and thanks to the choice made, I found out something . more .

Sorry for being horribly vague but since this is the world wide web, I cannot spare details in case my PI identity is revealed. Hahah!

But anyway. At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all,

DID YOU KNOW... that Minah, is a brazilian (portuguese) word that means the same thing as in Malay??

Interesting, no ?

The only other words I know in Portuguese is "OY!" which incidentally means 'Hi',

oh! And "Keju" is cheese in portuguese as in Malay. Maybe not the same spelling but it sure does sound the same.

Maybe it was the invasion of Malaya a long time ago, that caused the language to somewhat merge. Maybe. Just maybe, the word "Mee na " is not really malay after all!

And then, the "Mee na" can finally own up to the label and be proud to be called thus.

Maybe then I wouldn't feel so ostracized whenever I get labelled thus.

I don't know what is it with people, but do they not realise I can never be a mee na thanks to my utter inability of staring at people for no apparent reason? Or for screaming at the top of my lungs? Or for torturing my god-given assets by pushing them up till they reach my chin?

I cannot emulate any of these characteristics.

Besides, Cogito, ergo not mee na . In other words, I think therefore, I cannot be one.

I realise that I'm starting to sound very very mean in this post and it's not without reason, too. I cannot understand stupid secondary school kids who give me the once over look. Or stare challengingly at me for a full 5 seconds to see if I give a damn. The fact that I'm writing about them probably tells you that I do . Hahah! Joke. I've had it too many times until even someone as insensitive as me can notice. Seriously, kiddos, I'm much too old to care shit about you tiny fleas staring at me. So what if I don't wear make-up to go to the market, so what if my top has thread frays at the end, so what if I'm pushing my grandmother's market trolley, so WHAT if I have a Mac lunch with my granny.. so what?

WHAT is it that they're looking at? What is it that they want to challenge?

Maybe they'll start to realise how stupid they look when the situation is reversed.

I think I’ve been very stressed lately.

My hair’s in a war with itself and ~~acne~~ acme has been having a fine time exploding on my face.

I weighed myself recently and realized that I may have a lost a significant amount of weight! Either that or the weighing machine’s broken. Although I think the latter has a higher likelihood. But maybe it’s all that bubble tea substituting my lunch or dinners.

Review is creeping in on us and while I’m not worried about some things, I’m sure as hell nervous about the rest. Lut was saying that if only we could combine powers like “Captain Planet! He’s the hero!” we’d surely be able to get an A++. She completes (and enjoys) all the assignments I hate to do, and somehow, I love doing everything else she hates to complete. Speaking of Lut, the lucky basket’s off for a work/ holiday thing for a whole week! Damn. That means no bitching about spoilt rich kids for 7 days!!

Today I suddenly felt like an objet d'art of the National Museum. It’s ironic how I’ve been to the National Museum twice in 3 months and yet, have never seen any of the exhibitions! Of course, I can tell you the contours of the pillars there in detail seeing that I’d stared at it for about 3 hours today. And at the end of the three hours, a man (he looked French, but I can’t be sure since he didn’t speak) walked past with a medium sized DSLR. He casually strode up somewhere near my left and started taking pictures of I don’t know what since I was too busy staring at pillars.

I’d assumed he was taking the view outside the window and trust me, he was there for quite sometime. He took quite a few shots and I started to think that maybe I should have been staring at the window after all since this guy finds it so interesting.

But as soon as he walked away, LV told me he’d actually been photographing me! Maaaannnn! I suddenly feel so famous!

We went to see the biennale with Jane today and I thought that it was quite interesting, some of the works. Maybe it’s because I’m older now and appreciate things better or maybe it’s just because of what I’ve been doing the past 2 months.

Anyway, there was clearly one exhibition that got people talking (and wondering). However, I personally found it disgusting. Sorry about the poor image quality, I took it from the guidebook.

Cute little maggots given the red carpet treatment when normally, people wouldn’t have hesitated to stomp on them. Take note, however that these ‘creatures’ you see here are really, about a metre long!!!

Another interesting one is the 20 metre by 20 metre Google Earth map of Singapore where visitors are given tags to write on and paste on places that were of significance to them. You could see everyone on their knees, searching for homes, schools, parks, swimming pools. And ohmydgod. ITE Simei is humongous but thanks to that, I found Bedok. (: You can barely see it but that’s my block, right there!

This artist planted thousands of colourful cutout plants in a large plot of sand.

Ahh. The canvas. Interesting work but I wonder how many thousand tubes of paint the artist had used since it was made entirely out of paint squeezed out of a tube.

There was a whole lot of video art, and installations which must be experienced firsthand in order to understand.

I hadn't intended this post to sound like a review but since it has turned out that way, let me just say that from my personal and utterly insignificant experience, I thought it was interactive, very interesting and if you enter with an open mind, you would, actually have a hell lot of fun trying to understand and 'play' with the art. They have none of that 'ol european art that promotes a culture of elitism. This is, literally, something that's from the masses, and for the masses.

Go visit the biennale! (:

I wrote a blooody long entry, ranting about shit and multiply decided to jam up on me.

Tsk. One can never trust the internet these days.

But anyway, Ain (dengan semangatnya) clarified with MUIS regarding their stand on the religious ruling on photography. This is what they say:

Contemporary scholars have differed on this issue:

a) The position of the overwhelming majority of Indo-Pak and some Arab scholars is that photographs of human or animal life are not permissible for the very same reasons that paintings of these are not permissible.

They state that the ruling on picture-making does not change by changing the tool with which the picture is produced. Whether an image is produced by painting it or using a camera, as long as it is an image of a human or animal, it will remain unlawful (haram).This is the position of Shaykh Mufti Taqi Usmani and most of my other teachers. It is, without doubt, the more precautious and arguably stronger opinion.

b) The second position on the issue, held by most Arab Scholars (from all four Madhabs) and some from the Indian Subcontinent, is that there is adifference between photos and the prohibited picture-making (taswir).

Shaykh Muhammad Bakhit al-Muti'i of Egypt, a 20th Century scholar known for his knowledge and piety, wrote a whole treatise titled al-Jawab al-Shafi fi Ibahat Surat al-Photography in support of this view of permissibility.

His basic understanding is that the reason behind the prohibition of painting pictures (in the words of the Hadith) is challenging Allah in His Creating of living creatures. In camera photos, however, one does not produce an image through one's own imagination; hence one is not challenging the Creating of Allah as such. It is merely a reflection of a living being already created by Allah Most High.

These are the two positions of contemporary scholars on the issue. There are great scholars of knowledge, wisdom and piety on both sides of the fence; hence, it would be wrong to criticize anyone for following any one of these positions.

It is a matter of genuine and valid difference of opinion. It is not an issue where one may condemn another, and one must respect others' right to follow their conscience.

Therefore, it depends on the intention and also function of the photographs mentioned.
